Mack Collier’s Z-Lister Meme Catches Fire

by Ben Yoskovitz on December 22nd, 2006

Entrepreneurs network and seek opportunities. At least successful ones do.

I’ve kept an idea on Mack Collier’s Z-Lister Meme for the last week or so and I’ve watched it explode. Makes sense. It’s easy for people to do, and it’s now hitting a tipping point where it’s creating an incredible number of links to all sorts of blogs. And we all know how valuable links are, right? Not as valuable as a buck in the bank, but darn close.

All you need to do is take the list below, copy and paste it with all the links into your own blog post and if you choose, add additional blogs to the list. I’m surprised we haven’t seen any double entries, but that shows you that people are really looking at the lists and checking them twice. The list keeps growing and growing, as more and more bloggers add to it on their own posts. And everyone gets more and more links.

For entrepreneurs looking to generate some buzz there are some interesting lessons:

  • If you want something to catch on, make it easy.
  • Appeal to the feisty nature in people. Go controversial or for the underdog.
  • When you see something take hold, push it forward as hard as you can.

I’ve added a few bloggers to the bottom of the list to push the Z-Lister Meme forward. Enjoy.

Mack is a great friend and community builder!

Your summary of what it takes to make something “catch fire” is dead on.

It’s an honor to be on the zlist - thanks for including Own Your Brand.

    Keep creating,
    Mike

GP - best thing to do is take the list here and copy it to your blog. That’ll let those people and others know that you’re participating. Eventually someone will add your blog to the list and then you’ll start seeing more and more links coming your way.

    Good luck!

[…] Thanks to startupspark.com I found out about the Z-List Meme going around, also found here. […]

GP - you don’t really need to edit the source but you could. As long as you display the full list and the links work to each person’s blog you’re fine. You could modify the source to add bullets, or other formatting if you wanted.

greetings, what i meant is that I just cant do an edit/select copy from the blog page, or it’ll just be text rather than the links… correct?

    GP - that’s true.

If you’re using Firefox you can select the text/links (hold the mouse button down and scroll over it / highlight it), right-click and view-source.

If you’re using IE you have to View Source (right-click), find the source where the links start and copy and paste. Bit cumbersome but not overly complicated.
